Sydney will always have a special place in my heart being my first-ever layover destination. Since my first trip there in 2015, it has never failed to amaze me. Should you have an upcoming layover in Sydney soon, here are some tips and the list of places I visited during my winter 2024 morning walk in this wonderful city.

Sydney is the largest city in Australia and arguably the most famous one. It is the capital of New South Wales, located on the southeastern coast of the country. It boasts iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge; beautiful beaches; natural attractions and diverse cuisine.

Last July 2024, we arrived in Sydney pretty late so almost every shop was closed. I tried to go to the Opera House to see the light show, nada. So I just went ahead and grabbed a burger and chicken fries at Hungry Jack's.

The first time I tried this fast food chain, I couldn't help but associate its taste and feel with Burger King... Even the logo and branding were a lot like Burger King! Apparently, IT IS BURGER KING. They just had it named differently since there was an existing establishment in Australia with the same name. Are you waiting for a review? Well, it tastes exactly like a Whopper. Those chicken fries are quite nice, light, and crispy.

The next day, I had a relaxing sip of coffee and went for a morning walk. The weather was nice. Although Sydney rarely experiences snow, June, July, and August are considered winter months. Averaging a daytime temperature of 17 degrees Celsius, the air has a bit of crispness to it but not too cold. A perfect temperature for walking. I just wore this pink blazer and headed out to the iconic Sydney Opera House.

Sydney Opera House is an iconic architectural landmark in Sydney and throughout Australia. It is renowned for its unique sail-like shell structure and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 for its outstanding universal value as a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture. Originally built in 1973, it has undergone significant renovations for facility upgrades while preserving its unique facade and historical integrity. Nowadays, not only does it host 1500 annual performances, but it also serves as the country's symbol for creativity and innovation, and one of the most visited tourist attractions in Australia.

Hitting two birds with one stone, going to the Sydney Opera House also gave us a glimpse of the Harbour Bridge also known as "The Coathanger". Just imagine a hook on the upper middle part and you have the world's largest hanger.

Sydney Harbour Bridge connects Sydney's Central Business District with the North Shore. This bridge was officially opened in 1932, spanning 1,149 meters (3,770 feet), peaking at 134 meters (440 feet) above the harbor. If you're not afraid of heights, you can be guided by professionals in climbing the bridge to reach its summit. The professional guides also provide historical facts, safety instructions, and insights into the bridge's significance, design, and structure.

St. Mary’s Cathedral and Hyde Park

I went on and walked south. Upon reaching St. Mary's Cathedral, I took a few minutes of rest and a few photos as well.

Completed in 1928, this church was built in the Gothic revival style. It was originally named the Cathedral Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It has two spires that reach 75 meters (246 feet) high, making the church one of the tallest structures in the city and a major landmark. It is not only a worship place, it is also a key part of Sydney's history and culture.

Opposite the church is the Hyde Park.

Amidst the bustling city, Hyde Park provides a green oasis for city settlers and tourists. Named after Hyde Park in London, Sydney's counterpart was also intended to be the city's recreational area. Established in 1810, it has played a crucial role in enhancing the quality of urban life and a habitat for local wildlife. Covering approximately 16.2 hectares (40 acres), the park features well-maintained lawns, pathways, and mature trees. It houses the ANZAC Memorial, a memorial dedicated to the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) soldiers who served in World War I, and the Archibald Fountain dedicated to the memory of the WWI Australian soldiers. Here's a glimpse of the Archibald Fountain.

I wanted to walk straight to Chinatown and have Chinese takeout for lunch but as I passed Darling Harbour, I realized I should head back to my hotel soon for our wake-up call.

Darling Harbour was a historically working port and industrial area transformed into Sydney's harbourside playground with different attractions and offerings.

Here are some activities this charming harbor has to offer.

  • Sydney Aquarium

  • The Star

  • Wildlife Sydney Zoo

  • Australian National Maritime Museum

  • Darling Quarter

Westfield Sydney

Right at the heart of Sydney CBD (Central Business District) is a premier shopping destination offering a luxurious retail environment, diverse dining options, and comprehensive amenities. Craving Chinese food, I ordered one for takeaway and hurried back to our hotel.

My Ultimate To-Buy List in Australia

Timtams and Lucas Papaw Ointment will always be in my luggage back home whenever I travel from Australia. Upon reaching the hotel, I bought some Timtams from Woolworths and some Lucas Papaw Ointment at Priceline at a mall next door.

I had a great time strolling around Sydney and I hope you find this blog informative. There's more to this city and I barely scratched the surface. Stay tuned for more posts about Sydney, Australia! Till next time!
