It houses iconic structures and skyscrapers, lush greeneries, diverse cultures, and an array of food choices. On top of it, everything is so accessible and secure. But there are some things to consider to make the most of your upcoming journey to this amazing country. Here are 11 things you should know about Singapore.

11 Things to Know about Singapore

It is diverse.

1. Singapore is home to multiple ethnicities and religions

Singapore has 4 ethnicities - Chinese, Malay, Indian, and others, with varying religions. And everyone lives in harmony. So get ready to spot Buddhist and Hindu temples in the same neighborhood. It is also common to come across someone wearing shorts and someone wearing a head covering known in Malay as Tudung. Every ethnicity has its colorful traditions and culture; together, they make Singapore the cultural melting pot of Asia.

2. Most Singaporeans speak Singlish

Singapore has 4 official languages - English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil. But almost everyone can speak English. A lot of them use the colloquial Singlish in everyday transactions. Did you know? The word 'can' is a complete sentence with various meanings depending on intonation.

"Can?" - Can you do it?/ Is it possible?

"Can." - Yes, I can do it./ Yes, it is possible.

Singlish has its distinct accent and set of words, like any other language. But the bottom line here is communication is rather easy since English is widely spoken.

3. Get ready for a foodgasm

Being the cultural melting pot of Asia, it follows that the food in this country is amazing. Whether you're up for something oriental or western, mild or wild, simple or complex, familiar or uncommon, there's something for you here. Try to eat like the locals and browse through your choices in a hawker center. Here is the list of my recommended local foods for authentic dining like a local.

Convenience is the Key!

5. Cash or Card

Being a modern city, everything here is systematic. It's always good to have cash on hand. But when you're running low on cash, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express) and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted across the country. Your Visa card may also be used to tap on buses and trains. Additionally, debit cards may also be used for cash withdrawals in ATMs. Take note though, that there may be some shops and hawker centers that will require cash. But if you're in touristy spots, card payments are generally welcome.

6. Places are highly searchable on Google Maps

To go places, use Google Maps or other navigation tools. The transportation system is so convenient and systematic that you just have to search it in Google Maps and the directions, along with what specific bus service number or train lines to take are already included. Your ETA is also computed. Grab a SIM card with data and navigation will be a breeze. Moreover, I'll post a transportation guide in Singapore in the coming days. Stay tuned.

7. There are always vending machines, toilets, and nursing rooms nearby

Singapore's known tourist spots are huge! Gardens by the Bay, for example, spans 250 hectares. Although there are shuttle services available, they may cost a few bucks. So make sure to have comfortable footwear and pack some liquid to keep yourself hydrated. There are some vending machines and shops in designated areas. Benches are also available to rest for a few minutes. Moreover, all attractions have toilets and an occasional nursing room nearby. They are always clean and tissues are promptly being replenished.

8. Island-wide wheelchair and stroller-friendly

Since there will be a lot of walking, will people with limited mobility miss out?

Good news! Singapore is continuously making significant efforts to improve wheelchair accessibility island-wide. Public transportation systems and most attractions are equipped with ramps, barrier-free routes, elevators, and toilets designed to be accessible for individuals from all walks of life. Both trains and buses have designated areas for wheelchairs and for easy boarding and alighting, buses are equipped with ramps as well. There are wheelchair and stroller rental services available online should you need one. Some attractions also offer wheelchairs for free usage within the vicinity.

It is a tropical country

9. Be ready to sweat and get soaked on the same day

Singapore is a tropical country with an average ambient temperature of 28.2 degrees Celsius for 2023, and scattered rain showers all year round. Prepare outfits suited for a warm and humid sunny day and do not forget to bring your umbrella for protection against the harmful UV rays of the sun and the surprising downpour. Weather forecasts are also helpful.

10. Repel those bites

With Singapore's efforts to build a city in nature and a sustainable way of living, it is remarkably getting greener and greener, as we speak. This makes Singapore highly livable. Like in any tropical country though, mosquitos and other bugs thrive on lush, wet spots. The government is serious about keeping dengue cases at bay, but it won't hurt to be cautious and protect yourself from their bites. So apply mosquito repellant or stick a patch on your shirt when heading somewhere green.

A luxurious destination or a budget one?

11. There are countless choices for accommodation, dining, activities, and shopping.

You could experience the luxurious and fabulous Singapore as depicted in many international films or the simple yet convenient lifestyle of the masses. It's your budget; it's your call. Either way, Singapore will surely fascinate you.

These are some things that will help you in planning your next trip to the Lion City. Hope these help!
